I have spent most of my professional career as a Financial Advisor to high-net-worth individuals. I became a Financial Advisor because I grew up in a household that struggled with money, and I wanted to help ordinary people make smart financial decisions. Once I became a Financial Advisor, I realized that the traditional compensation structure is based on a percentage of assets under management. So, the wealthier your clients are, the higher your compensation. The result is that the people who need financial help the most are the least likely to have access to trained professionals.

We live in a time where social media allows us to reach audiences like never before. Yet the financial advice market is flooded with ‘financial gurus’ and salespeople selling insurance and other products under the guise of financial advice.

I think a different approach can be successful in the market. Instead of traditional ‘money guru’ guidance of: ‘“X” is the answer” the narrative should be: “These are the things you need to understand and consider before making this financial decision.” This is how Financial Advisors work with wealthy clients, there is no reason this same information can’t be accessible to everyone.
